Specializing in large-format black-and-white architectural documentation
meeting HABS and HAER Standards.
James Norman studied photography under Dr. John Pennybacker and Murray
Stone, and has been a professional architectural photographer for
over 20 years. He has written three books on the architectural and
engineering history of Oregon, including Portland's Architectural
Heritage, the seminal Historic Highway Bridges of Oregon,
and an intriguing rephotographic survey, Oregon Main Street.
He recently collaborated with Sharon Wood Wortman to produce a new, 3rd edition of
The Portland Bridge Book, which was released in November 2006, and features
the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) photography taken by Mr. Norman for the 1999-2000
HAER Recordation Project of the Willamette River Bridges of Portland.

A photograph of the Yaquina
Bay Bridge along the Oregon Coast Highway, taken for the National Historic Landmark
nomination, and included in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress.
James Norman's documentary photography has been widely published, and exhibited in galleries
from Kawagoe, Japan to Washington, DC. His work is included in the permanent
collections of the Library of Congress, the President's Advisory Council for
Historic Preservation, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the National Register of Historic Places, the National
Park Service, the Oregon Historical Society, and the Smithsonian Institution.
Mr. Norman's photography is also included in the permanent collections of the
Seattle Art Museum, the
Portland Art Museum, and the Photographer's Forum, Santa Barbara, CA.
